Children at Wendron Pre-School use computers on a regular basis as part of their learning. In school, we have regular 'e-safety' activities to remind children of the importance of keeping themselves safe online.

At home, sometimes children can be given unsupervised access to the Internet. This, potentially, allows them to access all kinds of society (both good and bad) and bring them virtually into their homes.

Here are some tips and useful links to help you to keep your children safe online:

Always keep the computer in a family / communal room, and keep your children's use supervised.

Use some suitable parental control software to ensure your child doesn't accidentally stray into sites that are unsuitable, and don't take it off even if they promise not to go on websites they shouldn't - they might not realise the website is suspect till it's too late.

Try to make computer usage something that you do together, rather than as a substitute babysitter/childminder.

Check your computer's internet history regularly to see which sites your child has been visiting and if they're instant messaging.

Let them know you're monitoring their email and messaging accounts to see who they're talking to.

After initial arguments, it should help to prevent accusations of snooping later on.

How to install Google SafeSearch

SafeSearch screens sites that contain sexually explicit content and removes them from your search results. It's important to realise that no filter is 100% foolproof, but SafeSearch helps you avoid content you would rather your children did not stumble across.

To modify your computer's SafeSearch settings, click on search settings under the settings link at the top right of the Google home page.
